According to Variety, the Supergirl Television series has been picked up for the the 2015-2016 season on CBS. It has been a long time since CBS had a DC Superhero on prime time. The Flash was on CBS back in 1990- 1991 season. Before that, Wonder Woman had two seasons on CBS in the late 70s.
DC Comics has had a lot of success with superheroes on television lately. The Arrow and The Flash are both a huge success on the CW. Fox’s Gotham‘s ratings hasn’t been spectacular but it has been renewed for a second season. CBS is now jumping on the band wagon with their Supergirl series.
Unlike the Marvel television series of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil, the DC shows don’t share an universe with the movies. The supers and villains introduced on Gotham will not show up in those roles on a DC movie. Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist will not show up in Batman V Superman. The Flash will show up in the Justice League movie but it will not Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen.
The Supergirl series will star Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers (why not Linda Danvers- from the comics)/Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. Supergirl will be Superman’s younger cousin. Kara will be in her early 20s. She is finally ready to become a hero after showing up on earth in her teen years.
This is very exciting news for fans of the Maid of Steel (yes that is her nickname). I hope it will be great comic based show. Please no bad relationship tropes because she is a “girl superhero”. Supergirl is a great character that doesn’t need to be saved or to have a guy to be complete.
