According to Newsarama, Superman is getting a brand new power. It will be a very destructive ability that he hasn’t had prior. He will struggle to keep it in check. Control of this ability will not be easy for the Man of Steel.
This isn’t the first time new abilities and powers have been added to Superman. He has always been super strong and fast. But originally he wasn’t invulnerable (at least not at the current level) or ability to fly. Those powers were added over time. At one time during the 50s and 60s (Silver Age), Superman had super-ventriloquism or super-hypnosis abilities (often used to fool Lois Lane). At one point, he could even push planets into different orbits.
After his reboot after the Crisis (mid 80s), Superman was more limited and defined. He was no longer able to move planets and didn’t have the super-ventriloquism or super-hypnosis abilities. Over time, they have upped his abilities once again to make him virtually unstoppable.
DC Rebooted again with the New 52 but Superman primarily stayed the same but with a different costume. Now he gets a new power for the New 52.
For me (Larry), I don’t really care. I have always found Superman to be too powerful and not an appealing character. I know this will be a heretical statement for some of our readers including my buddy Geeky KOOL writer Bryan, and my father. But in my mind, he is just way too powerful of a hero without an interesting personality. He will always win because he is Superman.
I suppose this new power could give Superman enough chaos and struggles with control that it could become interesting. But I think he will learn to control whatever power it is and just become even more unstoppable.
Maybe Lex Luthor is actually right and Superman is just too powerful to be on Earth.
