In 1995, Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond scaled the Arecibo Observatory in GoldenEye. The Arecibo Observatory was a 900 Ton dish radio Telescope. It was 57 years old method to help search for life in the in Universe.
On November 19, 2020, National Science Foundation decommissioned this observatory. This came after two major cables broke. It appeared the platform would soon collapse. Yesterday, it fully collapsed with a controlled demolition. You can see the image above on how it looks now. Below is a picture of what it used to look like.
Ramon Lugo is the director of the Florida Space Institute at the University of Central Florida. They managed the Arecibo Observatory . Lugo was upset but the failure to save the Arecibo Observatory. He stated “I feel sick in my stomach. Truthfully, it was a lot of hard work by a lot of people trying to restore this facility. It’s disappointing we weren’t successful. It’s really a hard morning.” (Science)
