The European Space Agency’s satellite nicknamed The Ferrari of Space is expected to crash into the Earth sometime on either on Sunday or Monday because it has run out of fuel. This deluxe satellite is named the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE). The satellite is expected to break into hundreds of pieces and light up the sky. As much as 25% of GOCE may survive the re-entry and crash into the Earth’s surface. Because this satellite is almost directly over the northpole, experts have no idea where these fragments might land.
According to the head of the European Space Agency’s Space Debris Office, “250,000 times more probable to win the jackpot in the German Lotto than to get hit by a GOCE fragment.” If for some reason I am hit by a fragment of The Ferrari of Space, will I automatically win the German Lottery? If not, then I better call Allstate to make sure I am in good hands, just in case. (NPR)
