Timer Warner may no longer have their DC Comics Superhero shows stream on services like Hulu and Netflix. According to CEO Jeff Bewkes, they are considering changing the methods they distribute these series. Cable and satellite packages that include On Demand services may become the focus of watching the DC Superhero shows if you missed it live.
These comments came on the heels of disappointing third quarter earnings for Time Warner. Time Warner owns one of the largest cable companies in the United States. They are looking at methods to bring back people to Cable and Satellite services. Searching for ways to add value to cable is a priority.
If Time Warner decides to pull the trigger on this idea, series like The Flash, Arrow, iZombie, Gotham, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and the upcoming Preacher and Lucifer will not be available on Hulu the next day or on Netflix in a year.
The popularity of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu continues to grow as traditional cable and satellite providers continues to fall. Many people are chosing to become “unplugged” and rely on the internet and services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. My family made this choice a year ago and I don’t regret it. The younger generation is more likely to unplug and refuse to pay for cable packages.
According to analyst Anthony DiClemente of Nomura Securities, “Some of the media executives are looking at Netflix as a digital distributor who has gained too much power. They are thinking, look, maybe we should keep our most valuable content inside the traditional pay TV ecosystem, which is the golden goose.” (CBR)
It is unlikely that Millennialists and the next generation will jump on the cable and satellite bandwagon. Nor will they drop their streaming services because DC Comics series are no longer offered on them. It is more likely they will simply not watch or maybe catch up on it when Time Warner changes their minds.
My buddy Jeff predicted that his children, who are teenagers, will never pay for cable or satellite just like they will never know picking a long distance carrier. That time has passed for long distance carriers. It appears cable is on the verge of the same extinction. Time Warner could look for a way to advance their services past traditional cable and secure their future. Or they might double down on the current “golden goose” to find the goose dead within the next generation.
Even as a middle-aged male who loves superhero shows, taking these series away from streaming will not bring me back. Instead, I will find other things to watch. I believe most people will follow suit.
