Sony Studios announced Tom Hardy will star in their Venom movie as both Eddie Brock and Venom. It will be directed by Ruben Fleischer. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are set to write the script. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal are the producers. Venom is scheduled for release to theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
Venom will be the first of the greater Spider-Man universe movies that Sony is planning. Venom will not be directly associated Spider-Man. Spidey will not appear in the movie. Unlike, Spider-Man, Venom will not crossover with the MCU.
Sony posted a picture of Tom Hardy in a Venom shirt on Twitter. Check it out.

In the comics, Spider-Man brought home the Symbiote suit from the Secret Wars. After discovering the suit was taking him over, Spidey had Mr Fantastic help him remove the Symbiote suit. The Symbiote later escaped and bonded with Eddie Brock over both of their hate for Spider-Man. It doesn’t sound like this will be anywhere close to the origin of Venom for Sony’s movie.
I am a bit skeptical of this news. It is not because of Tom Hardy but in spite of his casting. I am skeptical of Sony making this film without first introducing the character in a Spider-Man movie (other than the terrible Spider-Man 3 film). Without a connection to Spidey, a Venom movie seem rather pointless. It is like a Cat Woman movie without Batman and we know how that turned out.
I am also skeptical because it isn’t connected with the MCE. Marvel Studios is not perfect but they have a good track record and know how to weave stories and characters together. I am not sure Sony has displayed that ability yet.
Here is to hoping it is awesome and I am just concerned for no reason.
