On Saturday, my wife, kids, and I flew to sunny Los Angeles, California for a vacation. We are spending two weeks with my wife’s family. We have been looking forward to fun and relaxation in the sun.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I was hoping to attend the San Diego Comic Con while on vacation. But because of high demand, I was unable to secure tickets the granddaddy of Geekfests. I have gotten well past my disappointment and anguish and have come to acceptance of my fate of no Comic Con for 2011. I put on one of my fanboy Tee-Shirts (my brown Firefly shirt) for the flight in honor of the event even though I am not attending. I was looking forward to the opportunity to read the latest edition of ESPN the Mag and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. Little did I know that I would not get much reading done on this flight.
Because Southwest Airlines has only 3 seats together, I sat in my own isle while my family sat in the three seats across from me. There were two seats next to me that were open.
At the end of the boarding, a couple walked to the back of the plane. As they walked past me, the wife noticed my Firefly shirt. She was excited and asked me if I was heading to Comic Con. I politely stated that I was not because I could not score tickets. She politely shook her head in understanding as they moved back in the plane. They were lucky enough to have tickets.
Since the flight was sold out, the nice couple had to come back to my row where I still had one open seat The husband sat next to me and the wife sat in the row in front of us. This is how I got to know Chuck and Ila Dezard.
I quickly became familiar with Chuck as he sat next to me. He is a kindred spirit. He is a Star Wars, Sci Fi, and computer geek. He is not into comics but we share a ton of similar geeky obsessions. Chuck share some of his stories about the Star Wars Celebrations and how he became friends with Peter Mayhew. Chuck also showed me pictures from a zombie movie where he was a zombie.
He is also a big NFL fan. He is a Miami Dolphins fan, which (IMO) is not as good as being a Cowboys fan. Atleast he is not a Steelers or Redskins fan!
Chuck and I discussed the train wreck of ticket sales for Comic Con. He was lucky to get in very early when they finally went on sale in the Fall. He was able to get 4 ticket but only for two of the days. Four Day passes were sold out very quickly even with the original ticket sales. He fully understood my frustration and disappointment with the system and how ticket sales were unexpectedly crazy this year. I shared my previous post with Chuck and you could tell it touched him.
Chuck has found an unique way to combine his passion for Star Wars and for his Miami Dolphins. He has created a costume for “Dolph Vader”. He has wore this to both games and geeky events. He will be dawning the Dolph Vader uniform for Comic Con. This is a fun idea and I was wondering why I had not seen a “Dallas Vader”? Of course the Cowboys are the good guys so maybe an “Obi Wan Cowboys” or “Han Staubach”. Anyway, you should check out Dolph Vader’s Facebook fan page and his website.
Chuck and I quickly became friends. He and his wife are now Facebook friends and I have Chuck in my Google+ circle. I am looking forward to reading about their fun and adventures in San Diego. Chuck informed me as we were exiting the plane that he would attempt to find a way for me to attend Comic Con. I really appreciated it but I realize that he faces a momentous task of trying to get me a ticket.
These have been a few geeky thoughts of my complex mind
