Here is a great comic from John Kovalic’s Dork Tower. This issue of this web comic discusses low level role playing game campaigns. Those were always hardest. You want to do a lot of KOOL things with a character in an RPG but often you can’t until you get past the low level missions. A buddy of mine starts everyone out at a higher level so people can instantly jump in and have a great time.
