Over the last several months, I have been hearing about Bluesky. I decided to look into Bluesky and how exactly it works.
In simple terms, Bluesky is similar to the Twitter/X social media platform. It has the look and feel of Twitter while being different. It was created by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey but he currently is no longer on the board of directors.
Bluesky is a Decentralized social network. What does that mean? I was asking the same question.
According to Tulane University’s School of Professional Advancement, “Decentralized social networks operate on independently run servers, rather than on a centralized server owned by a business”. “Decentralized social networks give users more control and autonomy. An individual can set up their social network and determine how it operates and what users can say. Instead of having content monitored by a corporation, the founder of a federated social network can establish the terms of acceptable behavior for the site.”
Who is using Bluesky? Recently Bluesky has passed 24 million active users and is still in it’s early stages. To compare, Twitter/X has 335.7 million active users. There are some big named celebrities who are using Bluesky like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mark Cuban, Quinta Brunson, Dril, Weird Al Yankovic, Guillermo del Toro, Barbra Streisand, and Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
It appears that many Bluesky users are former Twitter/X users who are unhappy with Elon Musk and his changes to Twitter. Bluesky being a decentralized social network is drawing some to its platform. Some are jumping onto Bluesky as they are hoping to jump into the latest thing before it takes off.
I have heard enough buzz about Bluesky to get my interest peaked. The idea of a decentralized social network is appealing to me. I did go ahead and join Bluesky but my reasons are a bit different. I am always looking at different avenues to increase the audience for Geeky KOOL. Bluesky is another avenue to get the word and articles out to the public.
