What Is Up with the Trading Cards Sales Ban?

This week, Target have stopped selling trading cards of all kinds in their stores nationally. The suspension of in-store sales is temporary. The online sales are not affected.

Some Wal-Mart stores have similar signs posted about not selling trading cards at this time. Again, this is believed to only be temporary.  Wal-Mart is reporting that this is not mandated for all of their store.  They are concerned about the safety of their customers.

Over the last year, trading card sales and interest has skyrocketed for all sorts of cards.  Everything from sports cards to Pokemon and everything between has gone up. Sales on E-Bay for specific cards has hit all time high prices.

Some believe this reaction to Target and Wal-Mart stopping the sell of popular cards is for two reasons.  Theft of these cards is at a fever pitch.  They are usually on shelves with little to no visibility for staff to monitor.  They are small and easy to slip into a pocket.

There has been some violence related to trading card sales. There have been several incidents.  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, “A disagreement over sports trading cards on Friday led to a fight in the Target parking lot in Brookfield and only ended after the victim accessed his gun, police said. After the victim, who has a concealed carry weapons license, obtained his gun the four suspects fled on foot. No shots were fired and the suspects were soon located by police and taken into custody. ”

It is crazy that we live in a world where people threaten each other over trading cards and that stores like Target and Wal-Mart have to stop selling them.
