Wonder Woman opening night review

So in keeping with the “new tradition” on showing movies the night before the actual release date. Ashley and I caught the 8pm showing of DC’s summer superhero movie Wonder Woman.

DC Fans caught a small taste of the super heroine played by Gal Gadot in last years movie Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but this movie was all hers. DC beat Marvel to the punch by releasing a movie starring a female super hero.

This is specifically an “origin story” as we get a look back at Diana as a small child, and moving through her early adulthood. Gal Gadot OWNS THIS ROLE. She brings a wide range of emotions to various points in the film, and clearly understands WHY her character is important to the larger DCEU(DC Expanded Universe). Chris Pine(Capt Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek) plays Steve Trevor. Pine is cocky and funny in the role, playing Trevor with the right amount of flair, but not taking it to far(as he does in Star Trek).

DC Fans have spent years asking when is DC going to make a movie that doesn’t have the “Zack Snyder” muted tones and feel to it…..and director Patty Jenkins delivers a vibrant and bright film, with plenty of color. There are some differences between the comic book origin and the movie, but that is to be expected by now as both Marvel and DC try to broaden the fanbase.

The film has the right amount of action along with story exposition. It has all the usual Wonder Woman “items” such as the Lasso of Truth, and the iconic costume. In fact the first time the costume is shown in the movie, is such a powerful moment, that it did not lose anything from the appearance last year.

Since I try not to do spoilers, because I want Larry to see the movie(without knowing to much) I will only say the following……

This is BY FAR the BEST DC Movie released so far. It is a worthy lead in for Justice League later this year. It took DC a few years, but they are finally hitting their stride.

3.5 out of 5 stars
