The internet is buzzing with rumors about Wonder Woman. At Geeky KOOL, we try not to focus the various rumors that fly around the internet about our geeky pleasures. We prefer to report on substantiated reports. But sometimes, certain rumors do need to be discussed.
It is known that Wonder Woman will be in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. Fast and the Furious Actress, Gal Gadot, will protray Wonder Woman in this movie. The Wonder Woman rumors revolve around Wonder Woman’s Origin, power set, and costume.
The first rumor comes via Screen Rant. This rumor states that Wonder Woman will be wearing Amazon Armor instead of her more recognizable tights with star decorated short shorts. This might shock the casual fans who will be expecting to see Wonder Woman in the traditional costume from the cartoons and the Linda Carter television series, Wonder Woman.
I honestly don’t have a problem with Wonder Woman wearing armor. Her costume has changed numerous times of the the years. She went from wearing a skirt to shorts, to short shorts, to almost a thong. The breast plate has also changed several times over the years. Don’t forget the time she gave up her costume and wore a pants suit in the 70’s. She has worn armor as her main costume numerous times. The armor makes sense for a Amazonian Warrior Princess.
The other rumor is much more disturbing to me. It comes from the questions and answers on the website Batman On Film. Jett at Batman On Film stated clearly that these are just rumors and speculation at this point. The rumor is that Wonder Woman’s origin will be changed and she will be powered down for the movie version of her character. Instead of the Amazons and Wonder Woman having a huge mythology piece, they will actually be Kryptons that were left on the Earth outpost long ago. Because they have lived on Earth a long time, their power set will be much less than Superman’s power set.
I hope these rumors are completely false. Firstly, modern fans of comic book movies can handle mythology and “gods” in our movies. Marvel’s character Thor has been in three successful Marvel movies. You don’t have to change Diana’s origin story for the movie watchers. We can handle Amazons living on a paradise island named Themyscira.
We can accept heroes with powers that don’t come from Krypton. It is not needed to keep the story focused on Superman. You don’t even have tell Wonder Woman’s origin at this time. Kryptonian Amazons really don’t make a ton of sense.
The worst part of the rumor is the de-powering of Wonder Woman. In the comics, she can hold her own against Superman in a fight. They are equals. There is no reason to include Wonder Woman if they are going to take away her powers and abilities. That is crazy.
Making Wonder Women less powerful sends a terrible message to girls. Even when they have power, they still need to be saved by their “Superman”. Girls need role models that can go toe to toe against any man. Wonder Woman is a great comic book role model that needs to be displayed with her full power and glory.
