Back in the 1980s, the X-Men was one of the hottest titles from Marvel Comics. Most comic fans that I knew were reading at least one X-Men book if not multiple. I really loved the Uncanny X-Men and The New Mutants in the 80s especially when Chris Claremont wrote both books.
Into the early 90s, the X-Men remained a top seller. In fact the top selling comic issue of all times is X-Men #1 from 1991 sold 7.1 copies. They spawned a popular Saturday Morning cartoon on Fox (which I can still hum the theme song)
By the late 90s, the X-Men’s dominance and light started to fade. They received live action movies with several big star but the comic sales began to fade.
In the last 10 years, the X-Men seem to be nothing more than an after thought. Fans of the X-Men have had little to love over the last decade.
After the Secret Wars/War World event from last year, the mutants have nearly died out. The Inhumans appear to have taken their place as the quirky group outside of Marvel norm.
Times are changing. According to Marvel.com, The X-Men and related titles will return with a strength and hope in 2017. No longer will they be the punching bags of the Marvel Universe. The shiny light of the X-Men is returning to old form.
There will be several new X-Men comics coming in 2017. The flagship comics will be X-Men Blue and X-Men Gold (throw back to the 1991 X-Men teams). There are several other X-Men titles: Jean Grey, Iceman, Weapon X, Generation X, and Cable.
