As an avid anime fan since my days as a toddler watching the original Sailor Moon; when I heard that one of my favorite shows of all time, Inuyasha, was getting a sequel I jumped all over it. VIZ did their best to hold as many secrets as possible about the new show. The only thing they officially released was Yasha Hime would follow the adventures of Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru’s children. Great, off to a good start.
The animation is a perfect replica of the original series Inuyasha, with some familiar characters and some new faces. The plot that unfolds follows Sesshomaru’s twin daughters, Towa and Setsuna, who had been separated as children reuniting to fight a new enemy. Inuyasha’s daughter, Moroha, joins her cousins in battle, after the three are introduced to each other. It is a wonderful opening for old and new fans alike.
With all that being said, the story did disappoint me a little bit.
Not over the girls’ stories per say, but the character direction that the anime takes. I understand why the girls are on their own as a plot device, one that’s found in many sequels. That being said, the part that continually throws me for a loop is that the old characters from the original Inuyasha have little to no involvement with the main characters.
Kohaku and Kaede’s appearance in the series was a welcome surprise that has been, so far, lack luster. It is an enjoyable show to watch, all things considered. These are somethings that the fans who grew up watching Inuyasha late at night on Adult Swim will notice. My favorite thing about Yasha Hime would have to be Moroha herself. Her personality and attributes are in perfect sync with Inuyasha and I wish she had a larger role in the show than she does. I am disappointed to say that so far, she seems more comedy relief for Towa and Setsuna. I hope that as the first season begins to wrap up the plot line becomes more rounded but, it’s still a good way to pass thirty minutes. Just, to all my fellow Inuyasha fans, don’t compare the two shows to each other.
For everyone interested in Yasha Hime, it can be found on Hulu with new episodes appearing every Saturday.
